Sapphic Romance Anime: 20 Yuri Anime With Real Romance (Plus Western Picks)

Sapphic romance anime brings love between women to life through animation: the hesitation in a voice actor's breath, a slow pan across two hands, an opening theme you can't stop humming. In Japan these stories belong to the yuri genre, also called GL (Girls' Love), and the last few years have produced more openly romantic yuri anime than ever before.

A good recommendation goes further than the label. This guide sorts 20 Japanese anime and 7 Western animated series by one honest question: is the romance confirmed on screen, or is it subtext you interpret? We also note how much of the source each adaptation covers, because a finished anime season can leave a romance only half told.

Yuri anime with confirmed romance

In these series, the attraction between women is stated, acted on or both. They are the right starting points if you want a love story, not a guessing game.

Bloom Into You (2018)

  • TROYCA
  • 13 episodes
  • School drama
  • Slow burn

Yuu has never felt the "spark" that romance stories promised. Then student council president Touko confesses that she loves Yuu precisely because Yuu doesn't seem to fall for anyone. Thoughtful and tender, with a gorgeous soundtrack, it is the modern benchmark for serious yuri anime. Anime Feminist has praised its handling of queer experience. The anime adapts the early part of the manga. The full story concludes in the eight-volume manga from Seven Seas.

Kase-san and Morning Glories (2018)

  • Zero-G
  • Single OVA (about 1 hour)
  • Sweet
  • Established couple

Shy gardener Yamada and athletic Kase-san are already falling for each other at the start, and this short film follows their first steps as a couple. It is gentle, warm and easy to fit into one evening. If you want more, the manga continues their story much further. See our manga guide.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury (2022–2023)

  • Sunrise
  • 24 episodes + prologue
  • Mecha
  • Canon couple

Suletta transfers to a school where mobile-suit duels decide everything. When she wins a duel, she accidentally becomes engaged to Miorine, the headstrong daughter of the school's corporate owner. It is the first Gundam series with a female lead, and a corporate-war thriller with real stakes. Their relationship is the emotional core, and the finale confirms it.

Ending (spoiler)

Happy: the epilogue shows Suletta and Miorine together, with matching rings.

Adachi and Shimamura (2020)

  • Tezuka Productions
  • 12 episodes
  • Slice of life
  • Gradual

Two high-school girls start hanging out on the second floor of the gym when they skip class. Adachi slowly realises she wants far more from Shimamura than friendship. It is quiet, introspective and very slow. Adachi's feelings are explicit, while Shimamura is still catching up. The light novels go much further.

Whisper Me a Love Song (2024)

  • 12 episodes
  • Music
  • School
  • Mutual pining

Himari tells singer Yori "I fell in love" after a performance, meaning she's a fan. Yori takes it as a confession and falls for Himari. The anime is bright and sweet, and it centres the question of what kind of love Himari feels. The final episodes were delayed before release, so check that your platform has the complete season.

Citrus (2018)

  • Passione
  • 12 episodes
  • Melodrama
  • Content notes

Stepsisters Yuzu and Mei are thrown together after their parents marry, and a turbulent romance follows. It is a hugely popular entry point to yuri, but its forceful early scenes and taboo setup are not for everyone. The manga continues the story well beyond the anime.

Sweet Blue Flowers (2009)

  • J.C.Staff
  • 11 episodes
  • Literary drama
  • Partial adaptation

Childhood friends Fumi and Akira reconnect at neighbouring girls' schools, and Fumi navigates first love and heartbreak. It is a watercolour-soft, mature adaptation of Takako Shimura's manga. It covers only the early part of the story, so read the manga for the ending.

Yuri comedy and fantasy anime

I'm in Love with the Villainess (2023)

  • Platinum Vision
  • 12 episodes
  • Isekai rom-com
  • Openly queer lead

Office worker Rae wakes up as the heroine of her favourite dating game. Instead of the princes, she pursues Claire, the arrogant villainess. Unlike many yuri leads, Rae says plainly that she loves women. The comedy grows into a story about class prejudice. The official series description makes her romantic pursuit explicit.

The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady (2023)

  • Diomedéa
  • 12 episodes
  • Fantasy
  • Royal politics

Princess Anisphia, who remembers a past life and is obsessed with magic, takes in Euphyllia after Euphyllia's fiancé publicly breaks off their engagement. Their partnership grows alongside a plot about magic, power and succession. It is colourful fantasy with real feelings at its centre. Check the platform's content advisories, as the series includes fantasy violence.

There's No Freaking Way I'll Be Your Lover! Unless… (2025)

  • Studio Mother
  • TV anime + sequel film announced
  • Harem rom-com
  • Light-novel adaptation

Renako just wants to be normal and popular. Instead the school's most perfect girl, Mai, and then several more girls, want to date her. It is a fast, funny, very self-aware yuri comedy based on Teren Mikami's light novels. It was a hit, and a theatrical sequel has been announced.

Yuri Is My Job! (2023)

  • Passione
  • 12 episodes
  • Workplace comedy
  • Performance vs feelings

Hime works at a café where staff play students at a refined girls' school, and the "sisterly" roleplay turns into real rivalry and attraction. It is clever about genre tropes and full of twists among the café staff.

Sakura Trick (2014)

  • Studio Deen
  • 12 episodes
  • Fluffy comedy
  • Lots of kisses

Best friends Haruka and Yuu start sharing secret kisses to keep their bond special in high school. It is light, silly and affectionate. Viewers who want depth may find it thin, but it was a milestone for how openly its couple shows affection.

Classic yuri and sapphic anime

Revolutionary Girl Utena (1997) and Adolescence of Utena (1999)

  • J.C.Staff
  • 39 episodes + film
  • Surreal fairy tale
  • Kunihiko Ikuhara

Utena wants to be a prince, not a princess. She duels to protect Anthy, the mysterious "Rose Bride", in a school full of symbolism and secrets. Utena and Anthy's bond is the heart of one of anime's most influential works. The film version makes their romance more explicit. It is dense and challenging, with mature themes including abuse.

Sailor Moon: Haruka and Michiru (from 1994)

  • Toei Animation
  • Sailor Moon S onward
  • Magical girls
  • Iconic couple

Sailor Uranus (Haruka) and Sailor Neptune (Michiru) are a couple in the original manga and the Japanese anime, and generations of queer fans loved them. Some older English dubs notoriously rewrote them as "cousins". Watch a faithful subtitled version or the newer uncut dub.

Yuri Kuma Arashi (2015)

  • Silver Link
  • 12 episodes
  • Allegory
  • Ikuhara

In a world where bears and humans are divided by a wall, girls who love girls fight a system built to "exclude" them. Another surreal Kunihiko Ikuhara work, it is an openly queer allegory about conformity and love. It is strange, symbolic and unforgettable.

Subtext, interpretation and "is it yuri?"

Queer viewers can find real meaning in relationships the text never names. Friendship, romantic coding, openly expressed attraction and an established relationship are different things. They can all be valuable, but a list that promises confirmed romance should say what the work actually shows. These anime are beloved by sapphic fans but leave the romance open to interpretation.

Liz and the Blue Bird (2018)

  • Kyoto Animation
  • Film
  • Naoko Yamada
  • Interpretive

Two high-school band members, oboist Mizore and flautist Nozomi, prepare a duet as their friendship nears its end. Naoko Yamada's film is exquisite and intimate. It is one of the most discussed "is it romance?" works in anime, and the answer is yours to decide.

Lycoris Recoil (2022)

  • A-1 Pictures
  • 13 episodes
  • Action
  • Subtext

Cheerful agent Chisato and serious newcomer Takina work at a café that hides a secret operations unit. Their partnership is devoted and very shippable, but the show does not frame it as romance. It is a great action series if you enjoy reading between the lines.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica (2011)

  • Shaft
  • 12 episodes + films
  • Dark magical girl
  • Devotion

A deconstruction of magical-girl anime. Homura's single-minded devotion to Madoka drives the story across timelines, and many fans read it as love. It is dark and tragic in places. Watch it for the storytelling, with the romance as interpretation.

Otherside Picnic (2021) and Flip Flappers (2016)

  • LIDENFILMS / Studio 3Hz
  • 12 / 13 episodes
  • Surreal adventure
  • Coded

Otherside Picnic follows two women exploring a creepy parallel world. Their bond deepens much more explicitly in the light novels than in the anime. Flip Flappers is a dazzling, dreamlike adventure about two girls whose connection is coded rather than stated. Both suit viewers who like their yuri strange.

Sapphic romance in Western animation

These are not anime. Keeping that boundary clear helps people searching specifically for yuri. Western animation has produced some of the most celebrated canon sapphic couples of the past decade.

Adaptation scope: what an anime season actually covers

Most yuri anime adapt manga or light novels that continue long after the final episode. A completed anime season can therefore end before the couple gets together, or right after. That is why a "complete" anime should never be labelled a "complete romance" without checking.

Ask two separate questions. Does this version end at a satisfying place? Where can you legally continue the story? Be wary of unverified advice like "start at volume four". Revised editions and rearranged adaptations make that unreliable, and reading from the beginning often adds scenes and inner thoughts the anime cut. Our manga guide lists the English editions of most series above.

How to watch yuri anime legally

Most titles here stream on Crunchyroll, HIDIVE or Netflix, depending on your country. Older series are often on disc from distributors such as Sentai Filmworks or Discotek. Start with the official listing, then confirm your region, subtitle and dub options, and the content rating. A listing in one country doesn't guarantee availability in another. Legal streams support the studios that make more yuri possible.

Sources and method

Series details were checked against official platform and distributor listings, including Crunchyroll (Adachi and Shimamura, I'm in Love with the Villainess, The Magical Revolution…), Sentai Filmworks (Kase-san and Morning Glories) and Seven Seas (source manga and light novels). Production and sequel announcements were checked against Anime News Network, including its 2024 and 2025 reports on There's No Freaking Way I'll Be Your Lover! Unless…. Critical context draws on Anime Feminist's queer anime recommendations. Netflix Tudum's editorial guide was used for She-Ra. "Confirmed" means the attraction is stated or acted on in the anime itself. "Subtext" marks fan interpretation.
