Sapphic Romance Manga & Comics: 27 Yuri, GL and Graphic Novel Picks

Sapphic romance manga tells love stories between women through panels: a blush in the margin, a page turn that lands like a heartbeat, a silent frame that says what the characters can't. In Japan and among fans, these works are usually shelved as yuri or GL (Girls' Love). In English they now fill whole bookstore sections, from school slow burns to office romances between adult women.

This guide gives you 27 starting points: 21 licensed manga and 6 Western graphic novels and webcomics. Each entry gives the creator, the English publisher, the experience you're choosing and practical edition notes, so you don't buy volume three first. Manga, light novels, Korean manhwa and webcomics are different formats. We label each one.

School and coming-of-age yuri manga

School settings dominate yuri, but they vary enormously. Some are bright and comic. Others are slow, interior and surprisingly mature. A school setting is not proof that a manga is for children, so check each edition's rating.

Bloom Into You by Nio Nakatani

  • Seven Seas
  • 8 volumes, complete
  • Slow burn
  • Anime 2018

Yuu has always loved romance stories but feels nothing when a boy confesses to her. Then Touko, the admired student council president, tells Yuu she has fallen for her, precisely because Yuu doesn't seem to feel that way about anyone. It is a careful, beautifully drawn story about what love is supposed to feel like and what it really does. Seven Seas lists eight main volumes. The Regarding Saeki Sayaka light novels are a separate spin-off.

Kase-san and Morning Glories by Hiromi Takashima

  • Seven Seas
  • Series of linked books
  • Sweet and gentle
  • Anime OVA 2018

Shy gardener Yamada loves flowers. Kase-san is the school's star athlete. Their mutual crush turns quickly into a sweet, affectionate relationship that develops through school and beyond. Begin with Kase-san and Morning Glories, then follow the connected books. The publisher also lists the later Kase-san and Yamada continuation. It is one of the most reliably wholesome yuri reads.

Whisper Me a Love Song by Eku Takeshima

  • Kodansha
  • Music and bands
  • Misunderstood confession
  • Anime 2024

First-year Himari watches senior Yori sing at a school event and declares she's in love, meaning she's a huge fan. Yori takes it as a romantic confession and falls for Himari herself. Citrus by Saburouta

  • Seven Seas
  • 10 volumes + Citrus+
  • Melodrama
  • Content notes

When her mother remarries, fashionable Yuzu finds herself living with her strict new stepsister Mei, the student council president, who promptly kisses her. Citrus is one of the most popular yuri series in English. Its dramatic, sometimes non-consensual early dynamics have also made it controversial. Read it for high-drama romance, and know that the sequel Citrus+ continues the couple's story.

Girl Friends by Milk Morinaga

  • Seven Seas
  • 2 complete-collection omnibuses
  • Friends to lovers
  • Classic

Studious, introverted Mari is pulled into a friendship with stylish, outgoing Akko, and both start feeling more than friendship. It is a 2000s classic of the genre, simple and heartfelt. The English edition collects the series in two big omnibus books. Don't confuse that physical count with the original Japanese volume structure.

Sweet Blue Flowers by Takako Shimura

  • Vertical / Kodansha
  • Omnibus edition
  • Literary

  • Viral webcomic origin

Aya develops a crush on someone she assumes is a cool guy. That person turns out to be Mitsuki, her quiet classmate. Shared music gives the connection its rhythm. It is fun, stylish and sweet. Search with the exact title and creator, and start from volume one rather than a special edition.

Yuri manga about adult women

Not all yuri is about school. These series follow women with jobs, rent, exes and marriage pressure. For 15 picks, including cooking, fake-marriage and memoir manga, see our dedicated guide to yuri manga about adult women. Adult protagonists don't automatically mean explicit content, so check each edition's rating.

  • Manga of a light novel
  • Isekai
  • Anime 2023

An office worker wakes up inside her favourite otome game as its heroine. She ignores the princes and pursues the haughty villainess, Claire. It is one of the most honest manga ever published in English about queer adulthood, and it inspired a series of follow-up diaries. Please check the content notes before reading.

Sapphic graphic novels and webcomics

Yuri, GL and shoujo-ai: what the labels mean

Yuri (η™Ύεˆ, "lily") is the Japanese genre term for stories about emotional or romantic relationships between women. GL (Girls' Love) is a newer term used by publishers and fans, especially for clearly romantic works, and it is also used for Thai live-action dramas. Shoujo-ai is an older Western fan term for softer, less explicit yuri, rarely used in Japan.

None of these labels guarantees an explicitly established couple, an age category or a happy ending. Some yuri is openly romantic. Some centres intense friendship or ambiguous intimacy. Judge each story on what it actually shows, and see our anime guide for how we separate confirmed romance from subtext.

Editions, volumes and reading order

Begin with the main work's first volume unless the publisher names another entry point. Separate three status questions. Has the original Japanese series finished? Has the English translation reached the end? Does the edition you're holding contain the full story? A "complete" label should say which of those it means.

A light novel is prose with occasional illustrations, even when it shares a title with a manga. An omnibus collects several original volumes, so a two-book English set may hold the whole story. Webtoons are designed for vertical scrolling, and their print editions are reformatted. Japanese manga in English usually reads right to left, but Western graphic novels and webcomics do not.

Buy or borrow from licensed publishers: Seven Seas, Yen Press, VIZ Media, Kodansha and others publish most English yuri in print and digital. Many offer previews or digital chapters on their own sites, though access can vary by region. Libraries often lend manga through apps such as Libby or Hoopla. Avoid unauthorised scan sites. They take income away from the creators who make the stories you love, and they often host incomplete or mistranslated versions.

Sapphic manga FAQ

What is the best yuri manga for beginners?

Bloom Into You is the most common recommendation: it is complete in eight English volumes, beautifully drawn and emotionally rich. Kase-san and Morning Glories is the gentlest start.

Is all yuri manga romance?

No. Yuri covers romance, intense friendship and ambiguous relationships. Check each work's description and reviews if you want a confirmed couple.

Are there yuri manga about adult women?

Yes. Doughnuts Under a Crescent Moon, I Married My Female Friend, After Hours, Run Away with Me, Girl and Even Though We're Adults all follow adult women.

Should I read the manga or watch the anime first?

Either works. Anime usually adapts only part of a manga, so if you love the show, the manga is where the full story lives. See our sapphic anime guide for adaptation notes.

What's the difference between yuri and GL?

Both describe stories about love between women. Yuri is the long-standing Japanese genre term. GL (Girls' Love) is often used for clearly romantic works and for Thai live-action series.
