Thai GL Series for Beginners: 8 Girls' Love Dramas to Watch First
Thai GL (Girls' Love) series are live-action romantic dramas about love between women, produced in Thailand and streamed worldwide, often free on YouTube with English subtitles. Since GAP became the first GL series on Thai national television in 2022, the genre has exploded. It now has big studios, star pairings with global fandoms and new titles every season.
If you're new, the sheer number of shows can be overwhelming. This beginner's guide picks the 8 best places to start. For each one it explains the premise, the studio, how many episodes you're committing to and where to watch legally. Then it covers the practical basics: viewing order, uncut versions, subtitles and how fan "ships" work.
Quick answer: which Thai GL should I watch first?
Start with GAP (2022): it's the genre's breakout hit, free on YouTube, and the most common recommendation for beginners. If you want something softer, watch 23.5 (2024), a sweet high-school romance from GMMTV. If you loved GAP's leads, follow them to the period drama The Loyal Pin (2024).

The 8 best Thai GL series to start with
1. GAP: The Series (2022–2023)
Mon has idolised Sam since Sam helped her years ago. After graduating, Mon finally lands a job at Sam's company, only to find her hero cold and distant. Sam is also eight years older and from a royal-descended family with strict expectations. Mon slowly breaks down Sam's walls, and admiration becomes love. Adapted from a novel by Chao Planoy, GAP was the first GL series broadcast on Thai national television, and its episodes passed 800 million YouTube views within a year. It also launched Freen Sarocha and Becky Armstrong ("FreenBecky") as the genre's biggest pairing.
2. 23.5 (2024)
Shy transfer student Ongsa starts an online relationship with popular classmate Sun under the alias "Earth". Sun assumes Earth is a boy, and Ongsa has to work out how to tell the truth. It was GMMTV's first GL series, starring Milk Pansa and Love Pattranite ("MilkLove"). It is light, playful and romantic. Reviewers praised the leads' chemistry and found the writing occasionally too sweet. It is ideal if you want low stakes.
3. The Loyal Pin (2024)
Princess Anin and Lady Pin grow up together in a Thai royal court. Anin is sent to study in England at 15. When she returns for her brother's engagement, she realises she's in love with Pin, who has been arranged to marry a nobleman. Based on MonMaw's novel and starring Becky and Freen, it spans about 20 years. IDOLFACTORY's YouTube channel offers the uncut version free with subtitles in 13 languages.
4. Pluto (2024–2025)
After an accident on her twin sister Oaboom's wedding day, Ai-oon is asked to end her sister's relationship with May, who is blind. Instead, Ai-oon is drawn to May and poses as Oaboom to declare her love. The romance begins with a deception. Namtan Tipnaree plays both twins opposite Film Rachanun. It is another adaptation of a Chao Planoy novel.
5. Show Me Love (2023)
Meena dreams of becoming a singer and moves to Bangkok. There she is recruited into the Miss Grand pageant world and meets Cherine, a fellow contestant with the same manager. It was inspired by the real-life fan pairing of its stars, Miss Grand Thailand 2022 Engfa Waraha and Charlotte Austin ("EngLot"). It is a glossy, original story rather than a novel adaptation. A re-edited version was later made free on the channel.
6. Blank: The Series (2024)
Set in the same universe as GAP (Sam and Mon appear), Blank follows Neung, a 36-year-old artist burned out on relationships, and Aneung, a 20-year-old who pursues her. Neung initially sees her more as a daughter. Faye Peraya and Yoko Apasra lead a melodrama with family conflict and a season-one cliffhanger. Reviewers praised the leads but criticised uneven English subtitles. The age gap is the point, so choose accordingly.
7. Affair (2024)
Phleng and Wan were inseparable childhood friends until a business scandal ruined Phleng's family and she vanished without a word. Thirteen years later, Phleng is a struggling musician and Wan is a doctor, and Wan is married. Their reunion reignites old feelings. It is a short, adult second-chance drama that involves infidelity, for viewers who prefer grown-up stakes to campus romance.
8. Girl Rules (2026)
GMMTV's 2026 ensemble GL brings together stars from 23.5 and Pluto. It is a fun next step once you know the main pairings, and a sign of how central GL has become to the studio's line-up.
Suggested viewing order for beginners
- GAP: the genre's foundation, and the source of half the references you'll see in fandom.
- 23.5: a gentle palate-cleanser that shows the GMMTV style.
- Pluto: a more dramatic GMMTV story with a twisty premise.
- The Loyal Pin: period romance with the GAP leads.
- Blank: set in the GAP universe; better once you know Sam and Mon.
- Show Me Love or Affair: when you want something more adult or glamorous.
None of these is a direct sequel, except that Blank shares GAP's world, so you can safely skip around.
New and upcoming Thai GL (2026)
At its November 2025 line-up event, GMMTV announced several new GL titles for 2026. Premiere dates and platforms may vary, so check GMMTV's official channels.
- Ditto: Milk Pansa and Love Pattranite reunite after 23.5.
- Moonshadow: Emi Thasorn, Bonnie Pattraphus and Film Rachanun.
- Enemies With Benefits: Jan Ployshompoo and JingJing Yu.
- Oxytoxin: Waifha Chonitsiri, Tonkhao Nontakarn and Yogurt Yosita.
Where to watch Thai GL legally
Thai GL is unusually accessible: many shows are free on the studios' official YouTube channels, often with English and other subtitles. Look for the studio's verified channel rather than re-uploads.
- IDOLFACTORY (YouTube): GAP, The Loyal Pin and other IDOLFACTORY titles, including uncut versions.
- GMMTV (YouTube; broadcast on GMM 25): 23.5, Pluto, Girl Rules. Some titles are also on Netflix, Viu or iQIYI depending on your country.
- Netflix, iQIYI, Viu, WeTV and GagaOOLala carry many GL series by region.
- GrandTV (YouTube): Show Me Love.
Availability changes by country and over time. A show free on YouTube in one region may be geo-blocked or on a paid platform in another. Fan re-uploads often have poor subtitles and take views away from the studios that fund more GL.
Ships, uncut versions and fandom etiquette
Ships and pairings. Thai studios cast leads as recurring pairs with fan nicknames combining their names: FreenBecky, MilkLove, NamtanFilm, FayeYoko, EngLot. Pairs promote shows together through fan meetings and social media. Enjoy the chemistry, but remember that a promotional ship is not evidence about the actors' private lives, and respectful fans don't speculate about it.
Uncut versions. Broadcast versions on Thai TV are sometimes edited. Studios often release longer "uncut" episodes on YouTube, which is usually the version fans recommend.
Novels behind the shows. Many Thai GL dramas adapt Thai web novels. The author Chao Planoy (เจ้าปลาน้อย) wrote the source novels for GAP, Blank and Pluto. English translations are limited, so the series are usually the easiest way to experience these stories.
Tropes to expect. Workplace hierarchies, wealthy families, age gaps, secret identities and slow-building first kisses are genre staples. Episodes run about 45–60 minutes, and most series are a single season.
GL beyond Thailand
Live-action GL is growing elsewhere too. In Japan, NHK's She Loves to Cook, and She Loves to Eat (2022, second season 2024) adapts the manga about two neighbours who bond over food. You'll find the manga in our yuri manga about adult women guide. Taiwan's Fragrance of the First Flower (2021) reunites two former classmates. For animated yuri, see our sapphic anime guide.
